Oktyabrskaya metro station "Stages of the Great Journey" Florentine mosaic artist Andrey Kuznetsov
The main theme of the station is the Great October Revolution of 1917.Oktyabrskaya station was awarded to Yuri Vdovin, who was the chief architect of Metrogiprotrans (State Design and Survey Institute for the Construction of Metro and Transport Facilities) at that time, without any competition. The co-authors were Yuri Grigoryev, the chief architect of Minsk (1974-1986), and Evstafy Leonovich.
The external and internal monumental design was done by Moscow monumentalist Andrei Kuznetsov, who by that time had earned a reputation as an artist who competently worked with interiors. The station was made higher than originally planned, the columns, thanks to glass imitating amber, resemble torches - this is how the resemblance to a ceremonial hall was achieved. On both sides above the escalators there are relief heraldic panels made of white marble with the main communist slogans. The external entrances and exits are decorated with Florentine mosaics under the general title "Stages of a Great Journey" with lyrical and heroic sketches from Soviet history. Artist Mikhail Savitsky, former chairman of the monumental section of the Union of Artists of the BSSR, claimed that only Kuznetsov knows how to handle Florentine mosaics well. Architects from the Union of Architects of the BSSR, the same ones who worked on the appearance of the city in the 1940s and 1950s, believed that from an architectural point of view, the mosaic panel "is not tied to the scale of the building, there is no integrity in the perception of the entire composition... in this particular case, there is a creative failure... Recommend suspending the installation... find a way to dismantle the elements and install them on other sites."
