Mosaic panels "Hero City", "City of Culture", "Builder City", "City of Science" in the Vostok microdistrict
There are two parade entrances in Minsk: the so-called Golden Gate on Station Square and the Vostok microdistrict. The Vostok microdistrict is a representative example of Soviet ensemble development of the late 1970s and complex monumental design. It is the last neighbourhood, at least in Minsk, built as a single architectural ensemble and the first in the BSSR with ceremonial monumental decoration. The ensemble part of the neighbourhood was designed by architect Vladimir Sysoev.Sysoev invited the artist Alexander Kishchenko to decorate it. Together with him Yuri Bogushevich, Gennady Zharin, Vladimir Krivoblotsky worked on the panels. The matte for the mosaics was brought from Ukraine. When mounting the panels, the artists worked at height in special cradles. As a result, the cost of decoration turned out to be almost equal to the cost of construction.
Four huge mosaic panels, each 51 x 9 metres in size, are four images of the city: ‘City of Hero’, ‘City of Culture’, ‘City of Science’, ‘City-Builder’. The images in the lower part of the panels are well visible up close, while the images in the upper part can be seen from afar.
All four panels repeat the iconographic structure and the central element - a female figure with a teenage boy - a symbol of a young developing city. The female figure is a reference to the coat of arms of Minsk, which depicts the Ascension of the Virgin Mary. Depending on the theme of the panel, the characters and the colour scheme change, for example, the main colour of the panel ‘City of Science’ is blue.
Kishchenko worked extensively with symbols and artistic quotations. Hands, another recurring element on all the mosaics, are associated with creation. The figure of a man in a circle is almost Leonardo da Vinci's Vitruvian man, as if hinting that man and his actions should be proportional to time and place. The figure of the trumpeter is an allegory of glory. The Belarusan folklore ensemble ‘Haroshki’ posed specially for the mosaic ‘City of Culture’.
