BEMZ mosaic triptych "Earth"

One of the most epic works of Belarusian monumental painting is the triptych ‘Land’, by artists Vladimir Krivoblotsky and Yuri Bogushevich. Three different stories about Belarus: the tragedy of the Great Patriotic War, revival and peaceful labour, the land of enlighteners and science.
The triptych was created on the initiative of Brest Electromechanical Plant Director Vladimir Salnikov. The artists worked on the mosaic for about 4 years - 1985-1989. The total area of the panel is 390 m², the cost of the work was 250 thousand Soviet rubles. According to the artists' drawings, the smalt was cast at the Kiev glass factory, where the best quality smalt was made. Each colour has 5-6 tones. The artists worked according to the Byzantine method - the mosaic was laid out in one piece.
All three parts of the triptych seem to be a single whole due to the chosen collage composition and colouring. The main elements are the human face and the hand.
The first mosaic panel ‘The Land Scorched by War’ is dedicated to the tragedy of the Great Patriotic War, the hand as if shading the land and people. The panel depicts the defenders of the Brest Fortress, the parade on Red Square, a mother protecting her children, the defeated army. The colour scheme is ochre-red - a mood of anxiety and tragedy.
The panel ‘The Land Reborn’ tells about the peaceful time. The country is recovering after the end of the war. Rebirth is connected with the land, which generously shares its gifts. The hand shows a new rebuilt city. The colour scheme of the panel - golden-blue creates a sense of hope and joy.
The panel ‘Land of Science and Culture’ tells about the peaceful past and future of the country. A hand points forward, a mother with a child taking its first steps. Francis Skaryna holds an open book ‘Not only for ourselves we are born into the world, but most of all to serve the common good’. Next to the first Belarusian book printer the artists depicted poets and writers: Yakub Kolas, Yanka Kupala, Maksim Bogdanovich, Francis Bogushevich, Alois Pashkevich, the leader of the uprising of 1863 Kastus Kalinovsky and cosmonaut Pyotr Klimuk. The colour scheme of silver-blue signifies a calm and confident mood.
